Preserving the Harvest

We had quite the marathon canning day on Monday. We picked ALOT of cucumbers in the morning and then decided to pickle them. Dave's first batch is finally ready and super yummy so we used the same recipe and got 7 more quarts. This batch was cool because we didn't have to leave the house to get any supplies. We already had everything.

Then it was on to the tomatoes. With a gazillion plants we have tomatoes coming out of our ears! So we picked the most ripe ones and canned them. We'll be able to make pasta sauces with them in the winter.










After a quick lunch, the Davidsons came over for our annual jammin' day. We had all been picking blackberries all summer and freezing them so we had a lot of jamming to do. Zack was the official cameraman of the event so maybe some future pictures will be coming. This is a picture of Zack putting the jars in the hot bath. They stayed in there for 5 minutes to sterilize everything. Overall it was a very fun day in the kitchen.


As for a final tally, we pickled 7 quarts of cucs, 5 quarts of tomatoes, and about 60 jars of jam. Whew! What a day. It was great.




p.s. we also held the Surviormania Constitution Ratification fire circle. The constitution was ratified with 2 amendments added. It was signed by all delegates present. It was voted that Zack, the gentleman from Salem, would hold the office of Secretary for the inaugural season. Rebecca, the madam from the Tenino Estate, will hold the office of Treasure! Let the fun begin!
