Hi family~
We are alive... and in China. I had many notions about what living in a Communist country would be like... especially having spent so much time studying Russian history. Chinese communism is nothing like I expected. We passed through customs without anyone so much as asking us a question! No one searched our luggage (these days it is worse to travel within the US!). I haven't seen anyone carrying semi-automatic weapons on the street (as I saw in Russia even after communism). Pretty much, everyday life feels as free as America.... although I know for some it isn't that way. As an American in China, I am freer than a normal citizen... things that they are imprisoned for, I can do freely.
We arrived in Beijing where we spent four days looking around with Billy's cousin and his son. We saw Tiannamen Square, some government buildings, the Great Wall... etc. Then yesterday morning we caught a plane to Shanghai and have been here for two days.
The most challenging part thus far has been the food. Although some of it has really been fabulous... some of it has been... hmmmm.... a challenge. Today we went to
a VERY fancy restraunt for a banquet lunch... There were 14 dishes served... I looked at them all... and at least 6 of them had eyes that looked back at me. :OP IKKK! The most noteworthy eating experience was in Beijing where we ate a very typical Beijing soup.... pig intestine soup....and....drumm rolllllll pleaaaaassseee..... I ATE IT! :) YAY! Go Tami! :) Mid-way I had a uncontrollable heave reaction... but I held it in and managed to finish the half-bowl that I was served. :) I'm so proud of myself!!... however, after that experience I have decided that there are some aspects of my American-ness that I am going to be just fine with, and not try to change.... one being my decision to avoid eating certain body parts. :)
OK... of course there are so many things I could say, but shouldn't fill up this family blog. I will try to keep you all posted. Much love!!

Wow! How exciting! And I am so proud of you for eating the soup. PLEASE fill up this family blog! Don't worry about that you hear? Okay picture posting. You know the page where you are writing you message? in that box, above where you're messaging are two little icons, the second one looks like a little picture. Go to that when you're done writing your message and the photo thingy should flip down that says download images. Hopefully you can use the first option to download images from your computer. Does that make sense? I was having trouble with the blogger and nobody else was for a few days, so it just might be a little glitch with it. The problem fixed itself within three days. Becky is good at explaining the process too, so do that Becky! I really hope you can post pictures! I'm so looking forward to seeing where you are and what you're doing! Even if you can't keep us posted regularly! Love you

I don't know the first thing about posting pictures but I'm looking forward to seeing some from China!

When I used Windows 2000 operating system, I also had trouble posting pictures. I finally got something to work using Paint Bucket but couldn't tell you what I did. Try following Becky's method. It is a little involved at first, but gets easier.
Love,
M
when i post a message it has an option to add pics.. theres an icon at the top where you post. ya things with eyes dont seem to be my thing... being picky and all... its great to hear from yall!
What an adventure. We really enjoyed the update. Are you able to get American food? I thought you were taking the train to Shanghai...
Love,
Mom
Yes... we had planned to take the train, but it would have been a nightmare with 275 pounds of luggage! The plane was a better idea. It actually only cost about 70 USD. If we had bought it in the States from a travel agent or online it would have been double that. Things here are really cheap!
